Fire Ratings Explained
iSteel specialise in Glazed Steel products, which is why we offer ‘E’ and ‘Ei’ Fire Rated solutions rather than ‘FD’ which relates to Timber.
– ‘E’ and ‘Ei’ ratings represent products such as Steel, Aluminium and Glass which are conducters of heat.
– ‘FD’ ratings represent products such as Timber which are non-conductors of heat
Both ‘E’ and ‘FD’ ratings are comparable, suitable for most situations and equally compliant with building regulations. The terminology is a little different to identify the material make up for a specific product.
To ensure that the correct product is quoted for and ultimately installed, we recommend presenting our downloadable ‘Fire Classifications Sheet’ to your local Building Control for confirmation of Fire Rating level your project requires.
Understanding Fire Ratings
‘E’ (Integrity Only)
Integrity Only Fire Rating refers to the length of time the product will prevent the passage of flames from transferring from the fire side, but offers no protection against heat.
An ‘E’ rating is followed by a number, which indicates the number of minutes the product will sustain protection for.
Typical ‘E’ Ratings
E30 (30/0) = 30 minutes
E60 (60/0) = 60 minutes
E90 (90/0) = 90 minutes
E120 (120/0) = 120 minutes
‘Ei’ (Integrity & Insulation)
Integrity & Insulation Fire Rating refers to the length of time the product will prevent the passage of flames, smoke and heat from transferring from the fire side.
An ‘Ei’ rating is followed by a number, which indicates the number of minutes the product will sustain protection for.
Typical ‘Ei’ Ratings
Ei30 (30/30) = 30 minutes
Ei60 (60/60) = 60 minutes
Ei90 (90/90) = 90 minutes
Ei120 (120/120) = 120 minutes
FIRAS accredited INSTALLERS

iSteel is proud to be part of and endorsed by the FIRAS regulatory scheme, audited annually to ensure members work to and exceed industry standards. iSteel prove on a regular basis that we are an exceptional producer and installer of fire protection products, which allows us to maintain our affiliation with WarringtonFire’s FIRAS.
The FIRAS scheme has been instrumental in improving the installation and maintenance standards of passive and active fire systems. FIRAS only accept applicants and award accreditation once it has been proved office management, workmanship and specialist training for install technicians meet a level of excellence.
FIRAS is a voluntary affiliation with a stringent application procedure and annual audits. Not all Fire Rated installers meet the standards of FIRAS. iSteel endoursement by FIRAS is a considerable signifier to clients, iSteel is exceptional at what we do and can be trusted to advise, design, manufacture and install to your fire rated requirements.
